Description:
Print of the painting entitled 'Linking the Great Lakes' by J.D. Kelly and reproduced by Confederation Life Association. The painting is of a tall ship called the 'Ann and Jane' which is preparing to be brought through a canal. There are men on board preparing the ship to go through, and there are men on land who are there to see the ship off. The land surrounding the ship has very little plant life on it, it is mostly just dirt. The clothing style of the men in the print is 19th century. Underneath the painting there are two columns of text. This text tells of the financing of the Welland Canal Company to build the canal, and of the grand opening ceremonies. The grand opening ceremonies took place November 27, 1829 and the ship called 'Ann and Jane' led the way, as the first ship through the canal. The text also tells of the extension of the canal to Port Colborne. This text is in French as well, on the right side of the English version.
